Alright people, it's time to start stepping up the fundraising efforts for Ironman Chattanooga. Starting with $3 for Triathlon Thursday! Hit my fundrazr page - https://fundrazr.com/campaigns/6b2s7 - and donate $3 for Triathlon Thursday.
Help support Ride to Give and Mended Little Hearts as I train for Ironman attempt 2 for the year. As most of you know, I faltered at Ironman Texas and have a renewed sense of focus and cutting out some of the "frivolous" stuff in life that really doesn't matter... no, that's not the wife and kids. ;) I'm spending less time on anything other than family/friends, work and training. Those come first and anything else is a distance 4th. I shorted myself for Texas and it's not going to happen again.
What that also means is I need more support on the fundraising side so I can focus more on training and less on trying to squeeze donations from people. The more you donate, the more I can set myself up for success at Chattanooga! Thanks!

Ironman Texas training... anyone... anyone...?
So here it is, early April and Ironman Texas is looming in the horizon.
And I've totally been slacking. To be more specific, I've been slacking on the bike riding. We have just now gained some momentum in the right direction with the family emergency that dropped on us in February, and my new day job has kicked into high gear. So, where does that leave time for 4 to 5 hour bikes rides and not to mention it's still not exactly biking weather in Kansas these days?
I have been piece-mealing rides together at night, in the mornings and when kids take naps on the weekends, but the moral of the story is it's not been enough.
With the race on May 17th, I've really only got the month of April to get off my but and get some time in on the bike in the mornings. It's been rough trying to get those AM workouts in. Who wants to get up at 4am after a full day of work, kiddos and house chores and getting to be at 11pm? Wha.... middle class problems I guess.
But, I've signed up, made my reservations and still fundraising for Ironhearts under the www.Tri4aHandUp.com campaign.
But, lets take a gander of what last week looked like:
RUNNING : 36 miles
BIKING : 80 miles all on the trainer
SWIMMING : 2.47 miles
TOTAL MILES : 119 miles
TOTAL TIME : 11:52
That's not exactly Ironman training numbers less than two months out. But, what can you do with real life? I'm trying not to beat myself up over it, but trying to celebrate the small victories over the snooze button!

Ironman Kansas 70.3 is right around the corner!
It's about that time... am I ready?
You always hear, it's better to be 10% under-trained than 10% over-trained. I think I'm 5% under-trained, so I'm right in the sweet spot for 2012 IM Kansas 70.3.
I've focused on the bike the past 4 weeks. Hill rides. Sprint workouts and getting the distance in, even if it means getting up at 4am on a Thursday to get a 45 mile ride in.
Running had been coming along great as I have set PR's at 5k, 10k and half marathon this year. Now, I'm not sure how that speed will hold up after a 1.2 mile swim and 56 mile bike ride. I've been doing some BRIK workouts, but they have been sparse.
The best swim for IM KS was...
36 minutes in 2010 IM KS when I DNF'd with a front flat that I could not get fixed out of T1. I think I was going to have a great race that year, but the flat took me out. The swim was perfect. Perfect weather, no waves and no full contact swimming. IM Boulder 70.3 2011 was water like glass with no wind and I pulled out a 35 minute swim. Best HIM swim by a minute. Definite capable of a sub 35 this year, I think.
Last year's 2011 IM KS was a 40.5 minute swim due to winds and waves. I was body slammed on more than one occasion and it was just rough overall.
The KC Tri brought out a pretty decent 28 minutes for 1500 meters and more than likely was longer due to an errant buoy. I think the swim can be pretty good, ans as good as 2010 if the wind holds off.
Bike, oh the bike...
Last year IM KS was the worst for bike splits. THE WORST. I just wasn't getting the speed I wanted. Was it equipment or training, or a combo of both?
Well, I have a new bike, new wheels and have upped the training. Hopefully the wind stays manageable and I can turn in a split of 2:56 or better to top 2009 IM KS splits. Last year was 3:09, gag.
I think last year I also tended to ride closer to home with a younger son in case I had to make a bee-line for home. This year he sleeps through the night on a consistent basis so I've ventured out to more challenging ride locations. Hopefully this pays off and the wind stays below 5mph. I think that was also a big contributor to a sucko bike split last year.
The run, run fast hopefully!
I've got the run dialed in as much as it will be for this year. Running great times for half marathons, but you can't translate that to a HIM run after 56 miles of biking and starting out at 11am or noon when the temps are heating up.
Last year was by far the best HIM run at IM KS at 1:53. Other than that, the other two HIM runs were well over 2 hours due to dehydration, GI distress and cramps. I have my revised nutrition plan to avoid GI distress and keeping sufficiently hydrated. Hopefully it all comes together this year.
Overall I'm not sure how it will go...
I've only completed 3 HIM's. I have signed up for 5, but one DNF for a flat and one DNS for my son's health complications at birth. So, it's not enough of a sample base for me to be 100% confident to shoot for a time. It's more like swim like I know I can, bike smart while staying on top of nutrition and hydration - remembering to cut off solids in time for the run and staying hydrated on the run with a heart rate around 165.
As long as I follow the "plan", I should be able to cross the line with no body malfunctions. If I can stay complication free, that allows me to open up a bit and push harder.
If I was stupid, I would take my best times in each split and call that my goal.
SWIM - 35 minutes
BIKE - 2:56 hours
RUN - 1:52 hours
And allowing around 10 minutes for transitions and miscellaneous stuff, that would be around 5 hours and 33 minutes.
Plausible, yes. Realistic? Not sure.

Thoughts of #ironman Louisville creep in @IronmanTri
The playoffs for most Triathletes is to race a full Ironman Event. I've signed up for 5 Half Ironmans with 3 finishes, 1 DNF due to flat tires and one DNS for the birth of my son. While the 70.3 distance is still a big challenge for me, my eye has always been on the full 140.6. Can I do it? Will I ever race one? Can my family and friends survive me training for one? All questions swirling.
By the way, the Superbowl would be the World Championship in Kona... a lofty target I'm sure I will only get to by winning a lottery spot.
Most of the time, I blow it off and don't worry about the stress of "should I" since most of the events sell out in 24 hours and I don't have the wherewithal to get plan before hand, discuss with my wife and sign up online they day registration opens. Can't sign up, no problem. I also read an article on Active.com asking some of the "should I" questions as well that made me think as well...
Problem was, I was poking around the IM website and saw that IM Louisville is still open. For how long, who knows. I'm not even sure it sold out last year. It's a tough course in the midst of some nasty heat on August 29th. I would suspect that's why it may not fill up. There's also the Utah race, but I read reports from the pros that the course was a b*tch and you're asking for trouble racing that event.
So, I just mentioned it to the wife with 80% joking and 20% serious. She was like "are you signed up for any Ironman races in 2012"? Um, no. Sure, go ahead... I was like, "who are you and where did my wife go"? Not in a mean way, but such a huge undertaking and she was more than happy to encourage me to sign up within 2 minutes of me bringing it up, until she asked, "wait, is that a half or full?". HA, busted.
But even after I told her it was a full, she wasn't totally turned off to the idea. But, she also knows the reality of life and the fact I am OC and way too practical to just sign up on a whim.
Obstacles
I'm contemplating putting IM Louisville on MVT as a future event and hoping funding gets to a certain point before registration closes.
Something like $600 for registration, $300 for gas, $300 for 3 nights lodging and $200 for food, totalling $1400 at minimum. Fellow IM finishers, does that sound reasonable?
The MVT project has been going well. The Heartland 39.3 series is picking up partners, Ruckus came up quickly and I'm adding more events. I'd like to get a race kit made and work in all partners while writing content for them and helping get the word out about them.
It's a lofty goal. Any thoughts? Sadly, I believe in myself enough that I can complete and compete in a full 140.6. The reality is that we have had some tough financial times with medical situations. I'm not complaining, to an extent. We have jobs, we have health insurance and we live a nice life. What sucks is when you want to do a couple things outside of "normal" and you don't have the funds. Tough times call for creative measures!
What do you guys think out there? I've shared my Examiner writing. A lot of you have probably found me from EverymanTri.com. And some have probably just stumbled on to my site surfing the web from work when you should be working. =)
Nothing worse then putting it out there and having no interest. But, you can always say, "nothing ventured, nothing gained

Obstacles
- Training time. It was tough with a 3 year old, 1 year old and a wife with medical issues to find the time and not feel guilty for what time I did train for 2 HIM's last year. I don't want to take away time from my wife and kids to train. I also would like to keep my job, so i can't just quit to train. I'm not a pro, sadly.
- Money. It's $600 just to sign up, not counting to and from Kentucky, lodging, food while I'm there... etc. It's not cheap.
- What do you do with the family? Take the kids and make the wife watch them for the entire pre and during race period? That's not fair. Leave the kids and just take the wife? That's more realistic, but the kids that suffer missing you while you train don't get to participate in the culmination of your training.
- The unexpected. Wee Man has had some resurfacing of some of his health issues. Nothing extreme, but we are looking into some possibilities for conditions he has that could have long term and costly ramifications. Ironman's can wait, his health cannot. Then, you add the wife and her foot into the picture. Who knows if that ankle will hold up with work and life. Lots of medical concerns running around our house.

Ironman on sale already??
So I get an email titled "$199 Early Registration for 2012 Ironman 70.3 Kansas and 2012 Ironman 70.3 Mooseman".
Sweet! Two HIM's for $200!! Not really. For the low price of only $199 you can enter IM KS 70.3 (Regular $225) or IM MM 70.3 (Regular $260).
For you New Hampshire people, saving $60 is a decent deal if you know you are going to commit to the race a year out. For us Kansans, is saving $25 really worth the uncertainty if you will be able to do the race ina year? It's not like it has ever sold out in Kansas.
Race entries per the last 4 years for IM KS 70.3
2011 : 1476
2010 : 2019
2009 : 1924
2008 : 1204
As you can see it's gained popularity, but last year was a STEEP decline in registration. If they want to get back to 2009-2010 numbers, dangling $25 isn't going to get it done, I think.
Give me $75 or $100 and then you have me seriously thinking about next year.

Hump Day
Wednesday has a new meaning for hump day.
Our 3 month old son, Liam, has been battling issues with his health ever since birth. This has culminated in a double whammy surgery today to knock out two issues. We tried using medications and other means to control his issues, but he proved that he wasn't going with that plan.
So hopefully today is his hump day and it's smooth sailing after today. He went through the procedures with no problems and we await to see how recovery will go at the hospital and at home.
TRAINING
With family issues going on, I've been limiting myself to mornings only on the treadmill or trainer, saving lunches and after work for hospital visits and tending to the family.
If I was better about getting up on time, I'd have more done in the week. =) Dang snooze button. Gets me all the time and when it's 19 degrees outside, those covers are extra warm!

Too Good Not to Share
So, if you have not heard, Ironman just announced the IRONMAN ACCESS membership.
Here's a brief OVERVIEW.
To go long with that, @SKDickey on twitter tweeted the following link:
http://www.xtranormal.com/watch/7478523/?ref=nf
Now, I'm not all out bashing on IM, but they are pushing the envelope and that video was pretty damn funny!
