Sounds counter-intuitive, right? Sure does but that's exactly what Katie Morse wants you to do!
About a month ago Katie Morse, founder of The Regimen along with Scott Allen, posted a tweet on twitter offering a month membership to The Regimen.
What is The Regimen, you ask?
At it's core is a series of workout videos developed from the perspective of a active triathlete. Katie Morse has completed 2 Half Ironman races as well as running a marathon. She is also certified as a personal enhancement specialist through the National Academy of Sports Medicine and continues to take classes from the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
The idea is workouts on demand, you can do the same one over and over or pick a different workout. You have to accomplish 10 easy workouts to get to medium and 10 medium workouts to get to the hard workouts. Once you get there, you can do any of them at any time.
What's different than other online workouts is there is a point system set up to earn rewards - gear or access to other videos. That's on big difference from other workout programs I've seen. Most you have to pay additional money more to get their gear. At least with The Regimen you have an added incentive to keep up with the workouts.
BRASS TACKS
Ok, how were the workouts you ask?
Just to qualify myself, I've run marathons, half ironmans, 10k's, etc. I put my time in for training so I would like to think I'm a good judge if a workout is bogus or not. If you don't think so, I don't want to hear about it. ;0)
The first easy program I did was pretty straight forward. Katie does work in stretching type of moves that made me even more aware I'm not as limber as I should be. There was one rock on the floor on your back to your feet move that I sadly lamed out. So it wasn't plyometrics class in college, but it wasn't a cake walk. It's as easy or hard as you want to make it. I have a weight vest that I could have used and that would have added to the impact. It reminded me of a "class" I did last winter twice a week for maybe 2 months. A local running group organized it and it was geared for core work and I paid $80. While it was beneficial, it wasn't the challenge I was looking for when I plunked down the cash. With the Exert package you can get in 30 workouts for $50. The math speaks for itself and I wouldn't have had to drag my rear end out of bed at 5am and into the cold two days a week. AND if I missed a day, I could do the workout the next day!
It's also convenient with a family. If you have 30 to 45 minutes and the internet, you can get a quick workout in. That's a big deal with a 2 year old and a 7 week old! Not to mention, the 2 year actually joined in for 3/4 of one workout. If she's captured by it, it must be a winner, right!?
Here's the link to frequently asked questions. It explains some of the videos and how the membership and points system works.
You're membership is a monthly fee and you get a specific amount of videos. So if you view your allotment of videos before the month is up, you either pay more or cash in points.
For my in person class I was getting 16 classes for $80 in two months - $5 per class. If I had a two month Exert membership I could get 60 classes for $100 - $1.67 per class. The burn was the same or better for The Regimen classes. You get what you put into it and I have a weight vest I could have added for more pain and suffering.
Overall I thought it was a good program (made me sweat) and definitely seems to have value as the cost per class is priced to win out over other types of in person classes I have access to around here in Kansas City.
