Swim Meister Tony starts a blog!

Most of you know two very important things about me. One, I have a wife and two kids, and one of those kids has Autism. Two, I’m a swimmer. In 2010, I became involved with an organization called Train 4 Autism. This organization helps me bring those two passions of my life together. Each year I select one athletic event, and use it to raise funds for the Autism related charity of my choosing. This year I’ll be competing in the 2012 USMS Summer Nationals July 5-8 in Omaha. My charity will be the Ozark Center for Autism.

About the event:
2012 USMS Summer Nationals The exciting part of this meet is it will be held in a temporary pool in a large arena, the same pool that just a few days earlier will host our nation’s best swimmers in the US Olympic Trials. I’m also excited about moving into a new age group, and seeing some new competitors. I will compete in 5 or 6 individual events, and 2 to 4 relay events. Those events will be the 50, 100, & 200 meter breaststroke, the 200 meter individual medley, and one or two other events that I will decide on in the near future.

About the charity:
Ozark Center for Autism located in Joplin, MO provides Autism services for children and adults in a 4 state region. Founded in 2007, it’s the only facility of its kind in the area and provides help to many that would not otherwise have access. It’s a non-profit organization that services a relatively low income population. And, it is also still recovering from their facilities being completely destroyed by a tornado on May 22, 2011. It’s obvious the need is great even before you consider they are planning to build a new facility to replace the one they lost, while remaining fully operational.
New twists this year:
  • I have started a blog called Swimming Autism Dad that allows you to follow me along in my journey. I’ll post things about my training, fundraising, our own challenges with Autism, and anything else I think will entertain or inform you.
  • I am usually very private with my swimming goals, but I’m going to share some with you. Why? I’ll use it as incentive to work harder for the cause. I’ll tell you a goal, and you can contact me to pledge that you’ll donate a certain amount if I reach it. I’ll keep track of the pledges and post where they are periodically on my blog. It will be informal, and on the honor system, it will be up to you to honor your pledge if I reach my goal. The first one is at the end of this email. If you don’t like it, there will be more. They will all be good though.
How can you help? Make a donation. Make a pledge. Follow me on Twitter @TonyRezek. This will be quite a journey for the next couple of months; I think you’ll enjoy it if you join me. Here are some important links in addition to those above.
Goal to Pledge for:
FINA (the international governing body of swimming) each year produces World Top 10 lists for each age group in masters swimming. They also keep an all-time top 10 list. I used to have a couple of swims on the all-time list, but over the years, I moved farther down the list, and in 2009, I got bumped off. I want to get back on that list. Right now that means faster than 30.52 in the 50 meter breast, 1:08.21 in the 100 breast, or 2:31.76 in the 200 breast. This could be a moving target, as others could go faster between now & then. I will keep an eye out for faster swims, and if those times change, I’ll post them on my blog before my race. If you want to motivate me, make a pledge to donate if I reach this goal. Just contact me; I’ll put you on the list.

Thank you for your time. I hope you are able to help, for the need is great. Anything helps, big or small.

March 2012 Swim Meister Tony News

A lot is going on in the swimming world. Some countries have already started their Olympic Trials, including the British who will be hosting the Olympics. The American swimmers are in the last few months of their training for the U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha. The Columbus Grand Prix starts today. Not all of our top swimmers are their, but Michael Phelps and Natalie Coughlin are. Natalie has been just on fire for the last year or so, and Phelps has a renewed determination after being touched out by Ryan Lochte in 2 events at World Championships in August. This meet will be worth keeping an eye on, as well as the Indianapolis Grand Prix at the end of the month.

A lot is going on locally, as many local masters swimmers are preparing for 2012 Summer Nationals. Last weekend was the All Relay Meet at Roeland Park, which had a record 60+ masters swimmers. Here’s what is coming up next.
  • March 31 & April 1; Breadbasket Zone Meet in St. Louis
  • April 1, if you don’t want to go to St. Louis and want a great workout, check out the attached flyer for the April Fools Workout.
  • Spring Long Course Meet, they still haven’t ironed out details yet. I do know it will either be the weekend of April 21, or the weekend of May 12.
  • And of course Summer Nationals, July 5-8. See details below.
  • As always, for details on local events, go to www.movymasters.org and click on Upcoming Events.

See the March edition of StreamLines below.
  • Eleven Miles for Eleven Years; Inspiring story about a cancer survivor that used swimming to improve her health.  MORE HERE
  • Shoulder to Shoulder; We don’t get many injuries in the pool, but when we do, it’s usually the shoulder. Take care of your shoulders.  MORE HERE
  • Nationals; Below is info on both Spring & Summer Nationals. Online registration is now open for both. Spring will be in Greensboro, NC in a brand new facility, and reportedly will include one of the most famous masters swimmers in history, Lance Armstrong. Summer Nationals in Omaha will be held a few days after U.S. Olympic Trials, in the same pool. Make sure you check out the promotional video below, it’s very cool. This meet is possibly a once in a lifetime, definitely no less than once in 4 years opportunity. There will be clinics and training opportunities with former Olympians, and multiple social events. See below for details. Remember, swimmers of all abilities are welcome at these meets. And you can swim up to 3 events even if you can’t meet any of the qualifying times. I promise if you attend one of these National meets, you’ll be glad you did. At Summer Nationals, you could be part of one of the largest teams, as there will be more than 50 swimmers from the Kansas City area.  MORE HERE
  • So many goggles, what should I wear?; USMS does a great job of reviewing products to make your swimming shopping easier. Here is the goggles edition.  MORE HERE

I hope you are getting in the pool, Corporate Challenge will be here before you know it. Check your inbox soon for an email with all the details including practice and tryout times and locations.

Happy Swimming

News from pool side with Swim Meister Tony

Even though we haven’t really had a winter (not yet at least), spring is just around the corner, and your warm weather activities will be here before you know it. Are you ready for it?

First, local upcoming events:

March 5, KC Blazers All-Relay Masters Meet: I love this meet! Relays give you that sense of team work that swimmers sometimes miss out on. I really love this meet because I get to help other swimmers that probably will never have a chance at an individual National Top Ten time, earn a Top Ten time on a relay. That is the main idea of this meet, and every year, swimmers of all abilities find themselves on a National Top Ten List. You can do that too! Meet info here.

March 31, Breadbasket Zone Championships: This meet is in St. Louis, which is hardly local. But, several local swimmers are planning to go. It’s a 2 session meet (Sat afternoon & Sun morning), so you can get in more events. I went to this meet at the same location several years ago, of course it was a good time. Meet Info here.

April or May; I have been assured there will be a meet at the new pool in Lees Summit. They have it narrowed down to 2 weekends this spring. Details to come.

July 5-8; USMS Summer Nationals in Omaha

I’ve always thought that adult swimming needs an ambassador, a huge name that people might follow and think “Hey, I might give that a try!” That person may have arrived. Since his retirement from cycling, rumors have swirled of Lance Armstrong taking a stab at the Ironman Triathlon World Championships in Kona, HI. None of that has been confirmed, but here are a few things that have. Lance is a registered member of United States Masters Swimming. He did compete in a swim meet last month for the first time in more than 25 years. And last week, in response to a USMS tweet asking people about USMS Spring Nationals, Lance replied “It’s on my calendar!” Who wouldn’t love the chance to race Lance Armstrong? I admit, the thought entered my mind, but I won’t be in his age group at the Spring Nationals. I WILL be in his age group at the Summer Nationals meet in Omaha that I already plan to attend. Will Lance attend that meet? See more on Lance as a masters swimmer here.

Swim thoughts with Swim Meister Tony

Hey Swimmers,
I hope you had a chance to catch some of the US Winter Nationals. The NBC broadcast was pretty short, but it was great to see some of our best swimmers are in great shape in their preparation for London. If you watched you may have seen a promo for Duel in the Pool. The US team will take on an All-Star team from various European countries in a duel meet. That will be on NBC December 17 from 1:30-3:30, and some of it will be live broadcast! Meet Website
There is really nothing set in stone on upcoming local events, but there are some things that are going to happen, details are just being finalized.
New Years Day; I heard through the grape vine Prairie Life in Olathe is doing 100 x 100 yards on 100 seconds
January; Lawrence Masters Meet, this is usually the 2nd or 3rd Sunday morning in January at Lawrence High School
March; Roeland Park All Relay Meet
Spring; Long Course Meet in Lees Summit

I know it’s tough with erratic holiday schedules, but try to disrupt your routine as little as possible. In fact schedule a little extra exercise to make up for all of the goodies you put away. You’ll feel much better if you start the new year the same shape and size you were just a few weeks prior!

Streamlines news from Swim Meister Tony

From Swim Meister Tony Headquarters,

Next up is a meet November 19 in Gladstone at the same pool that hosts the Corporate Challenge swim meet. Meet info should be available any day now.

Also keep an eye out for a meet in Lawrence in January, and the all relay meet in Roeland Park should be some time in March. Check Up Coming Events for updates.

NEW VIDEO: "We Are U.S. Masters Swimming"
USMS released this video a couple of weeks ago. I watched and said, “Yep, that’s us! That’s Masters Swimming!” Great video! Since YouTube is blocked here at work, I’ll be happy to invite anyone who wants to stop by and watch it on my mobile. We turn “I can’t” into “I can”!   "We Are U.S. Masters Swimming."

USMS National Championship Locations Announced
USMS Nationals in 2012 is all about the new and exciting. The pool in Greensboro just opened weeks ago, and I have heard rave reviews from multiple sources. And of course the meet in Omaha will be in a temporary pool that will be in it’s location just a matter of weeks.
USMS Nationals in 2013 is all about rich swimming history, with the spring meet in Indianapolis, and the summer meet at Mission Viejo. For 30 years Indy has been the standard for what makes a pool great, and still is to this day. It has hosted more meets of the highest caliber than any pool in the world. Mission Viejo has long been a swimming juggernaut, even way before I got involved in the sport.  championship events!

Help out Swim Meister Tony and Autism Speaks!

Just the other night, my wife and I took our oldest son Evan to the Royals game, leaving our youngest son Quin at home with the baby sitter. It was a perfect night, beautiful weather, great seats, and a big Royals win! Throughout the night I was amazed at how much Evan was enjoying the experience, he was all smiles the whole night through! That night made me realize just another of many ways our family is impacted by Autism.

It’s been 3 years now since Quin was diagnosed with Autism. Every family outing revolves around Quin in that every decision we make starts with “can we do this with Quin, will he participate, how do we prepare him, is it even worth trying?” These are questions every parent of a child with Autism asks. As a result, Evan misses out on a lot of things, just because he happens to have a little brother with special needs. To this day, I’m still learning how Autism impacts a family. And I imagine how families cope with more severe cases of Autism than we do. I’m sad that Quin wasn’t there with us that night, but it was refreshing not dealing with all the challenges Autism brings us on a daily basis. It was bittersweet.

On September 23rd, I will be participating in the Kansas City Walk Now for Autism Speaks.

Autism Speaks is an organization that helps families like ours learn to deal with the challenges Autism brings into our lives. They provide us kits that include information to help us know what to do help our children with Autism, where to go for help, and connect us with resources that can provide assistance. They help with what the Autism community know as “The Transition”, which is the journey from being a child with Autism to being an adult with Autism. They advocate for us with legislators to promote research and assistance, and to keep pressure on insurance companies to provide coverage form medically necessary therapies for children with Autism. They reach out to communities to not only raise awareness, but also to assist schools in understanding and supporting students with Autism.

Please help me support Autism Speaks and all they do. We need to add some people to our walk team, so please join Our Mighty Quin. It’s an inspiring event to witness, seeing thousands of people that come out to show they care. If you can not make it to the event, please consider making a donation, which can be done easily by going to my donation page.

Swim Meister Tony with the latest Streamlines from USMS - 9/8/11

Latest from Swim Meister Tony!

Local Kansas City Events:

Lee’s Summit on Oct 1 and 2.
It’s a Saturday afternoon/Sunday morning event, held in a very nice, new facility. I haven’t swum in it yet, but I have seen it, and it looks to be a very fast design. A two day meet in a fast pool means if all goes well, I will taper and shave for this one, something I don’t think I have ever done for a meet in the KC area, should be exciting! Meet info can be found at http://www.movymasters.org/events.html .

Gladstone is still scheduled for November 19.
It’s one of those quick one session meets with a fun social afterwards. Still waiting on event info.

Lawrence meet in January - TBD

Roeland Park in March - TBD

Next: update on the crypto scare and local pools:
Many of the outdoor pools on the Kansas side closed a week or two early, and are done for the year. Many of the indoor facilities addressed the issue by bumping up their maintenance schedules, and “shocking” their pools with a heavy dose of chemicals. I received an email from KC Area YMCA that most of their pools are already complete. All in all, we are pretty much through the scare. But, if you don’t know for sure, call ahead to verify your pool will be operating.

Below is the September issue of Streamlines from USMS.

An Open Water Tour of New York: From Coney Island to Lake Placid I love how USMS features the “average swimmers” as well as the record breakers! Read more...

I like the Anxiety in Open Water Swimming article. Although it describes worst case scenario, and much of what is here you won’t see in a race, you have to be prepared. On one hand, don’t let it scare you. On the other, you do have to respect the danger of being in a large body of water with no flotation device. Read more...

Swim Parka Overview: Just about the most popular fashion in swimming (besides suit, cap, and goggles) is the swim parka. I haven’t had one since college, but it was a very useful and versatile garment, for more than just staying toasty on deck during meets. Maybe I need to think of getting a new one. Here are some reviews of some of the major brands that make them. Read more...

This week with Swim Meister Tony

The latest and greatest from Swim Meister Tony!

Swimming news has been very busy lately. Hopefully you got a chance to watch some of the televised National Championships that were held at Stanford University at the beginning of this month. We saw many of the swimmers from the team that represented the U.S. at the World Championships just a few days before. Some of them struggled, yet others were able to overcome the difficulties of an extended taper and jet lag from their China trip, and swim even faster than they did in Shanghai. We also saw several swimmers who just missed making the Worlds team shine with a chip on their shoulder, and a couple of solid comebacks. U.S. swimming is looking stronger every day! Nationals here.

Did you hear about Diana Nyad? She attempted to swim from Havana Cuba to Key West. She swam for 29 hours, reaching almost half way (about 50 miles) before she had to give up. I can’t hardly call that a ‘failed attempt’! Pretty amazing what she accomplished at the young age of 61! Also check out what masters swimmer Jim Barber did that get him into Sports Illustrated “Faces In The Crowd”!

Upcoming Local Events:
There are still some opportunities to participate in swimming events this summer!
Swimming in Moonshine August 27th in Branson, MO. It’s a late morning event, so it can be don in a day trip if you prefer.
Penguin Paddle August 28th at Prairie Village Pool. Organized by our own Lisa Diven! Swim what ever distance you want up to 5k (or more). The main idea is to raise funds for the Arthritis Foundation, and have fun doing it! Contact Lisa with questions.

Going into fall, we have a couple of local meets.

October 1 and 2 there will be a meet at the new aquatic center in Lees Summit. Those of you that were able to volunteer at the Special Olympics event got to see what a great facility this is. For that meet the pool will be set up for a 25 meters format. Meet and entry info is not available yet.

November 19 (date is tentative) there will be a meet at Gladstone, same pool that hosts the Corporate Challenge meet. I participated in this event last year, and it was a well run meet, with a fun social afterwards.

No meet at Mizzou this year. For the last 5 years or so in early December, we have had a meet at the new facility at the U of Missouri. Due to the expense of renting that pool, and the availability of the new facility in Lees Summit, the Mizzou meet has gone to even years only.

Get out there and enjoy some outdoor swimming, there isn’t much time left! As always, feel free to bother me with any questions you have related to swimming! It’s one thing I never get bored of talking about!

Swim Meister Tony and the Swimming World Championships

Swim Meister Tony is busy planning his day around the Swimming World Championships.

From Tony :

The U.S. Swim Team is now in Shanghai, China for World Championships. As promised I did find the television schedule. There will be broadcasts on NBC, Sunday the 24th at 1:00 pm, Saturday the 30th at Noon, and Sunday the 31st at Noon. Yep, my DVR is already set. This will show finals of most events. You can get all of the action on the webcasts for a fee. Find more details on the meet here. This will be an exciting meet, and will get you familiar with a lot of the new names that will be in London next summer.

Of course this meet includes some huge names like Natalie Coughlin, Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps. Some other interesting names to watch, Dagney Knutson from Minot, ND (yes, her family’s home is underwater), cancer survivor Eric Shanteau, 35 year old Jason Lezak, and Mike Alexandrov, who could easily make the Olympic team for his birthplace of Bulgaria , but has chosen to take his shot at making the U.S. Olympic team, which will be significantly more challenging.
This morning Natalie Coughlin posted this on Twitter:
“Here's a pic of the competition pool. Reminds me of Omaha.”

How cool is that? Next summer you could swim in a pool in an arena that looks very similar to where the World Championships were held!

With the heat continuing and no rain, I want to remind everyone again to bring water bottles to practice. Most have been doing a good job of remembering, and we have adjusted the intervals, so attendance has been pretty good and misery loves company, so come on out to the pool to get ready for our Ad Astra Long Course meet (possible the last one), in Lenexa on Saturday, July 30th.
Click here for information about this fun meet that we have hosted the last 5 or 6 years, but will probably need to find a different option next year as the age group Division I meet will be in Wichita next year. Oh yeah, how about going to Masters Nationals in Omaha next year?!? The meet will be held in the Olympic Trials pool after Olympic Trials. Imagine swimming in the same pool as our future Gold medalists. You’ve got over a year to get ready, but there is already information on the USMS website.
I also have one more opportunity that some of you might be interested in. I have attached information about swim instructor positions opening up at Elite Gymnastics and Aquatics in Lenexa. The aquatics manager there told me that she has had some quality instructors over the past several years who were college age and they have a high turnover. They usually work 12-20 hours per week, and she is looking for people with aquatic experience that may have more longevity, so she asked me to see if any of our masters would be interested. If you are interested in the opportunity, contact Gina Skiles at (913) 469-5554.

Swimming Challenge - Swim Meister Tony

Direct from Swim Meister Tony, MOVY participates in the USMS 5K/10K postal swim meet!

This is an opportunity for those of you that like the challenge of the longer swims! Also a good chance to get an outdoor swim in before pools open on Memorial Day weekend. These postal events are kind of a remote swim meet, where you swim where ever you are, and mail in your results to see how you compare to others across the nation. If you can’t make it on May 22, you can do it on your own anytime between now and September 15. All you need is access to a 50 meter pool, and a friend with a stop watch.

2011 will make the 6th year the MOVY has actively participated in the USMS 5K/10K postal swim meet. Each Spring or early Summer we reserve a long course meters pool to hold a time trail for the 5K/10K postal. So here is your opportunity to challenge yourself:

Where: Roeland Park Aquatic Center, 4843 Rosewood, Roeland Park KS 66205

When: Sunday 22-May-11, first heat at 11:15am and second heat at ~12:45pm. Please arrive by 11am with paperwork completed. RPAC has the capacity to heat the water if the early spring air is cool, but we anticipate the pool to be 78-80 F (good for a long swim).

Note: Waterpolo has a workout from 9:30-11am, so we will start after they are done.

How Much: To cover pool time and supplies, $7.50/swimmer and entry fee for event is $10. Checks can be written for the whole amount to "MOVY Masters" and cash will be accepted. MOVY will enter your splits and time into the on-line entry, and MOVY will pay for relays into the event.

Bring: Comfortable swimwear that is FINA approved. Many swimmer also like to have some "body glide" to prevent chaffing during the long swims. Many swimmer like to have two or more pairs of goggles. With mid-day swim we also encourage everyone to wear sunblock. Bring a helper with you to support the timing and split taking; but if you cannot find someone to help, come anyway, as we find ways to cover all the timing and splits.

What else: Reserve your lane by e-mailling the coordinator: Anthony Thompson, swimtotoswim@msn.com or call and leave a message at 913 262 2464.

What if: The postal swim event goes from 15-May-11 to 15-Sept-11; so if you cannot make this time trail 22-May-11, we encourage you to complete this fitness challenge at your own pool and follow the on-line instructions below.

Swim Meister Tony And Monthly USMS Newsletter

Getting There One Stroke at a Time
  • They always start with an inspiring story and this one is no different. Learning to swim as an adult? I can’t imagine having that courage. One quote in this article really struck me. “If not for the encouragement of the other swimmers I would have quit.” It is such a huge advantage to swim with a group!
Member Rewards Program Kick-off
  • They are doing random drawings for small give aways, the last couple of rounds have been pretty much product samples. But, the latest round of winners includes the guy that has been the starter at KCCC swim meets, pretty much since KCCC started.
Are You Self-Coached?
  • If you swim on your own, read this one! Ever go to the pool with no work out in mind? How does that turn out? Usually that means you swim about half of what you expected to, or maybe less, and you haven’t put in much quality work. Here you can get great workouts written by professional coaches. You still have to motivate yourself to get through the workouts, but with a solid plan you are certain to do much better than making it up as you go along.
SWIMMER Magazine: Wetsuit Testing Video
  • l Sure to be worth the time for triathletes in the market for a wet suit. They give a pretty in depth review of each wet suit tested.
We've Got Spirit!
  • And finally, my good friends Joy, Tony, Christie, and Tony are featured in this section. I wish I could have been there to see them smash 2 WORLD RECORDS! I also missed the opportunity to swim on an ‘All Tony Relay’. Oh well, maybe next year. Congrats to this exceptional group. They not only have talent coming out of their ears, they put in the work too. It’s great to see very deserving people achieve such a great feat!
    • This young foursome just broke two FINA World Records at a unique relay meet where all relays and courses are swum in the same meet. Last year, this relay team broke a 19-year old USMS record, but because one of the swimmers was only 24 years old, they were not recognized by FINA. This year, despite the record getting faster by an Australian team in 2010, they broke both the 400 LCM Free and 800 SCM Free mixed relay records. Congratulations to: Joy Stover, Tony Stewart, Christine Fuchs, and Tony Diers.

This Week With Swim Meister Tony

This week with Swim Meister Tony:

We've Got Spirit!
Fort Lauderdale Aquatics Masters

Some coaches are so popular that visitors fly in from all over to swim with them. Swimmers from the Metropolitan LMSC (New York) visiting the ISHOF pool in Fort Lauderdale on a winter training trip had to share their lanes with another guest when they swam with Coach Marty Hendrick of the Summer Nationals Champs, Fort Lauderdale Aquatics Masters. The brown pelican, who was not charged a drop-in fee, was courteous and observed all points of etiquette. He waited behind the lane before hopping in, feet first, and circle swam. FLAQ Masters Coach John Acton photographed the pelican for stroke technique analysis purposes, but he flew off before receiving the feedback.

Do's and Don'ts of swimwear at masters swimming.

If you live in Kansas City, check out this killer swim challenge!  100 x 100 on 100 seconds.  That's 10,000 yards of swimming!  April 2nd, same day as rock the parkway so if you don't hit that run, check this out!

More On Swimming with Swim Meister Tony

Mark commented asking about the Masters Swimming deal.

So, I went to Swim Meister Tony for the answer!

Tony hit me back with:

USMS has a tool that is not only good for finding masters groups in your area, but also anywhere in the U.S. if you are traveling.

http://www.usms.org/placswim/

It's good advice to call first, as not all of the information is up to date. For example, the Blazers masters group, this list says the morning sessions are 6-7 am, and they have been 5:30-7 for a couple of years now. So, it isn't a completely accurate and comprehensive list, but it is definitely a good place to start.

=================================================
I'll follow up with my experience.

Winter of 2009/2010 I knew I needed to improve the swim and I didn't want to hire a coach to do it.  There is only so far reading tips on the net and asking friends can get you when you want to improve.

That's when Tony told me about KC Blazers.  At first glance of their web site, it's pretty intimidating thinking that you will be swimming with former college swimmers and people that live in the pool.  I was nervous but knew I needed to improve.  It was $5 a session so the price was right and they had 5:30am group swims.

So, I packed my swim jammers and headed to the pool.

First of all, the weekday option was not as packed as I thought it would be.  Ten lanes and maybe 15 to 18 people.  They group by speed (which I realized later) and the "coach" lists out your workout and you hit the pool.

Tip 1 - Make sure you swim with people maybe a little ahead of your skill set.  Don't pick too slow, you won't improve.  Don't pick too fast, you'll get frustrated.  Not sure which lane you need?  Ask the coach.  If they are worth the title of "coach", they will know where to put you.

Tip 2 - Some coaches spoon-feed the workout section by section.  Some just blurt it out and you have to ask when you get to the next set.  The good ones have a dry erase easel and write the workout on it so you can reference it.  If you have the courage, bring your own small whiteboard and write it down so you can go at your pace.  Some coaches like to monitor your group's performance, so keep that in mind.

Tip 3 - Ask questions.  Fellow swimmers and the coaches usually have no problem helping you out.  That's what the coach is there for... to teach you how to improve.  Swim stroke, hip rotation, body position - there are all points I was instructed on.

Tip 4 - You are not alone as the "lesser swimmer".  I would say 15 to 20% of the people there were triathletes.  Of those, 5% knew what they were doing and the rest were trying to keep and do their best.

Whatever you can get done, be happy with.  There should be motivation to swim fast to keep up with better swimmers and enough influence to teach you proper technique.

Heck... just sit there and watch the "pros" swim.  You would be surprised at what you can pick up.

SWIMMING COMMENTARY

I want to take this Thursday to introduce Tony Rezek.

Tony is a friend of mine and very involved in Train 4 Autism (why I got involved) and a great swimmer.  He swam in college, had a layoff and then rediscovered his passion for the sport while winning a slew of gold medals at the Kansas City Corporate Challenge a few years ago.

He has great insight into swimming and in his "spare time" runs triathlons and has a great understanding of swimming and how it relates to triathlon.

So, adding a weekly or bi-weekly post dedicated to Tony's thoughts and ideas was an easy jump.

Here's the first Swim Meister Tony dedicated post (note that some of his perspective is based here in Kansas City but some ideas transcend geography).

  • Swimming Through Breast Cancer; This hit close to home for me, as I lost an old friend Jennifer Baus-Finder, one of my high school teammates to breast cancer 4 years ago. Swimming was one thing that helped Jennifer keep her strength in her battle. But I found things I did not expect to see in this article. First of all, the author Liz Pittinger went from her first swimming lesson to practicing with one of the top masters teams in the country (which includes some lady named Dara Torres) in just a few short months. Secondly, she credits encouragement and support from her fellow swimmers as much as swimming itself. There’s another great reason to find a group of people you can swim with on a regular basis. I hope none of you have to face what Jennifer and Liz have, although chances are some of you will, or already have. If so, I promise that you will be thankful to have team mates like Liz does. Also, Liz did compete in her first swim meet, and she did not get DQ’d in the IM like she feared she would.
SCM Results for 35-39 Age Group
Liz S Pittinger 2010-12-04  -  39 GOLD 50 Free H2 / L4  -  36.20  -  2nd Place
Liz S Pittinger 2010-12-04  -  39 GOLD 100 IM H1 / L2  -  1:40.79  -  2nd Place
Upcoming local events:
  • Triathlon Swim Clinic this Saturday: See attachment. I can assure you this group has people that know freestyle, and can help your triathlon!
  • KC Blazers All-Relay Masters Meet: At this meet they swim 13 different relays (39 if you count men, women, and mixed). The meet organizers make every attempt to get every participant on at least one national Top Ten relay, and they almost always succeed at that. If you are a novice swimmer, they will match you up with some elite swimmers on at least one relay to get you that Top Ten status. Also, last year we saw what would have been a FINA Masters world record, but the relay had one member under 25, which FINA does not recognize as a masters swimmer. They will attempt again this year, should be fun to watch! And Christie is 25 now, so it should count! http://www.movymasters.org/events.html
  • Gladstone Masters Annual April Fools Swim: April 2, 7:00 am at Gladstone Community Center. 100x100s on 100 seconds. That’s roughly 6 miles in a little over 2 hrs 45 min. If the interval is too fast for you to repeat 100 yds, you can choose 75s, or 50s, or less. Contact doughayden@sbcglobal.net.
Happy swimming, and remember a couple of things, 1) no matter how cold it is outside, every pool that is open has warm water, and 2) it is definitely not too early to start getting ready for Corporate Challenge!
